It had premises until 1856/57 at 1 Great Queen Street, on the corner with Little Queen St, as depicted in Thomas Hosmer Shepherd's watercolour of 1851, showing a large shop with prints in the windows and the sign 'Evans Print and Book Seller' (Crace,XXVIII.53; see Crace,XXVIII.53* for a related print). The firm moved in 1858 to 403 Strand where it remained until closing down in 1864. The founder was Edward V. Evans (1789-1835), a Welshman who had worked in the printing office of Nichols and Son (q.v.); his widow, Anne Elizabeth Evans (1791-1858), carried on the business in conjunction with her two sons, Edward David Evans (1818-60) and Albert Evans (c.1824-1869), the latter continuing until 1864. Several versions of the firm's name appear in the British Museum registers either as vendors or as agents commissioned to bid at auction; it is possible though unlikely that some of these records might refer to another dealer or individual of the same name. The Museum purchased more than 400 prints, together with some drawings and books, at the final sale of stock in 1865 (1865,0520.536 to 968). In 1896 Read succeeded Sir Augustus Wollaston Franks (q.v.), his former head, as Keeper of British and Medieval Antiquities and Ethnography at the British Museum where he had been appointed as a curator in 1880. Like the Principal Librarian, Maunde Thompson, he saw the museum as a centrepiece of the British Empire, and before his retirement in 1921 he greatly extended the collections and originated a series of guides and scholarly catalogues, to which he himself contributed. He was a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries (q.v.). He died on 11 February 1929 in Rapallo, Italy. He was succeeded as Keeper of his former department by the Byzantinist O M Dalton (q.v.). He began to travel widely from 1850, when he saw looped fabrics in Turkey which his brother copied to make towelling. During his travels he collected thousands of objects from around the world (see King, p.146 for his contribution to the evolutionary scheme of stone, bronze and iron ages). The bulk of his large collection was offered to the British Museum by the trustees of his estate (who included AW Franks [q.v.]) and was accepted c. 1868. The collection remained on display at his house in Victoria Street until after the removal of the natural history collections to South Kensington in the 1880s. Christy also left a sum of money (used to establish the Christy Fund [q.v.]) which allows for the occasional purchase of important collections or individual objects. Additional Information on his collection at the British Museum [by Marjorie Caygill]: The Christy collection was bequeathed to four Trustees, including Franks, in 1865 and shortly afterwards it was agreed that it should come to the BM. However, there were certain conditions, including the compilation of a catalogue and proper exhibition. If these conditions were not met the Christy Trustees retained the right to withdraw the bequest. It was therefore not possible to incorporate the Christy objects into the BM registration system, hence the slips. In 1862 Carl Ludvig Steinhauer, at ChristyÕs request, had produced a selective catalogue of his collection which was privately printed. Objects included in this catalogue now, usually, bear an St. prefix. After the collection came to the BM an attempt was made to revise Steinhauer. Objects similar to those in Steinhauer were slotted in. These bear an a, b, etc suffix e.g. St.400a follows St.400. Proofs of the partially printed catalogue appeared in 1870 but it was never finished or distributed. At the same time, FranksÕs clerk, T.K. Gay seems to have been going through the objects, producing the Christy slips starting with 1. He died in 1874 and the work was taken over by Hercules Read. This series goes up to 9999 then starts again with a + sign. At a relatively early stage objects added to the collection e.g. purchases from the Christy Fund, donations from Franks and others to the Christy Collection, are incorporated into this series. These are usually clearly marked with the name of the donor Š Christy objects are not usually annotated as coming from him. Objects actually from Christy seem to peter out in the 4000s. The Christy slips do not always give their provenance, e.g. some Mexican objects in the collection. For example, although some Christy slips are marked ŌDoyleÕ some objects, obviously from Percy DoyleÕs sale at SothebyÕs, are not so marked. There are also in the AOA archives some early Christy Collection registers post 1865. Quite how Gay and Read acquired the information in the slips we do not yet know. There may have been notes and in some instances it looks as though labels are being copied. At the same time, Franks was continuing with the BM registers Š the 0000,0000,00 series which is how ethnographic objects from 1753 onwards were recorded after the beginning of the 19th century. On the whole, it seems that Franks and Read largely kept ethnographic material within the Christy Collection series with other objects using the BM numbers. During his BM career known as Giuseppe, and had a side-line as a wrestler. Specialised in portraits, and it was through him that the Breun ledgers came to the BM. In his retirement he opened a shop dealing in prints and drawings (under the name Joseph Ceci; ?in Tunbridge Wells), and gave or sold many works to the BM. Other works were acquired from his widow after his death. Born in Hackney, London, Hayter studied chemistry and geology at King's College, London, and then worked for an oil company in Iran from 1922 to 1925. Deciding to become a painter, in 1926 he moved to Paris, where the Polish engraver Joseph Hecht introduced him to engraving. They shared a studio which, in 1927, became a printmaking workshop. In 1933 the workshop relocated to 17 rue Campagne-Premire, from which address it took its name, 'Atelier 17'. It rapidly became a centre for experimental engraving, attracting many international artists during the 1930s, including the surrealists Max Ernst and Yves Tanguy, as well as Alberto Giacometti and Alexander Calder. Hayter's experiments with engraving, and with obtaining textures by pressing materials such as gauze onto the soft-ground plate, were highly influential in disseminating surrealist ideas of automatism and of the subconscious. After the outbreak of the Second World War, Hayter left Paris for London and then moved to America in 1940. He first worked at the California School of Fine Arts before moving to New York, where he re-established Atelier 17 at the New School for Social Research, before it moved, in 1945, to larger premises at 41 East 8th Street. In New York, Atelier 17 became a focus for the ŽmigrŽ artists from Paris, such as Joan Mir—, AndrŽ Masson, Marc Chagall and Jacques Lipchitz, as well as for the younger generation of American artists like Jackson Pollock, Robert Motherwell and Willem de Kooning. In 1944 the printmaking activities of Atelier 17 were the focus of an exhibition, 'Hayter and Studio 17: New Directions in Gravure', at the Museum of Modern Art, which subsequently travelled the United States over the next two years. During the 1940s Hayter developed a method of making the first simultaneous intaglio and surface colour print, which he launched with Cinq Personnages (1946). Hayter's background in chemistry gave him an understanding of the different viscosities of the inks he was using. His innovative techniques were published in 1949 in his highly influential book, New Ways of Gravure, which was illustrated with the work of Atelier 17 artists. In 1950 Hayter moved permanently back to Paris and reopened Atelier 17. The New York Atelier 17 continued to operate under a succession of printers, finally closing in 1955. Over the next three decades Hayter continued developing his colour intaglio technique, refining it to achieve various degrees of transparency and tonal modulation. He produced some 452 prints in the course of his long career. The largest archive of Hayter's prints is at the British Museum, which holds more than four hundred impressions pulled between the early 1930s and 1960, including many trial proofs and states; the archive was purchased from the artist just before his death in 1988. 1843 Donated by :: Anonymous :: 1911 - 1926 1997 1931 - Identifier Donated by :: Cyprus Exploration Fund :: 1901 French, Cecil B 01 Jan 1906 Purchased from :: Graves, Algernon :: Purchased from :: Della Rusca, Pietro :: Durand, EdmŽ Antoine Appellation 1919 Chevalier Durand, EdmŽ Antoine 1991 - Painter, draughtsman and engraver. Badly affected by the Depression in 1934, he sold a large part of the first collection to the BM and the V&A for the token sum of £100,000; the collection was divided in proportion to the sum each museum contributed to the purchase. He continued to add to the residue and this second collection was dispersed after his death, at auction at Sotheby's in May and June 1940. A final sale was held in 1944 after the death of his widow Julia Eumorfopoulos (q.v.). Founded in 1760 by Giovanni Battista Torre (d.1780, originally a pyrotechnist), who was succeeded by his son Antony at an address in Market Lane, Pall Mall, moving in 1786 to 132 Pall Mall. Paul Colnaghi (1751-1833) was b. near Milan, and as an employee of Torre ran Paris branch 1784-7. Married Torre's sister-in-law in 1788, when Torre retired. Took Anthony Molteno into partnership 1789-93. Sala was also briefly a partner c.1800. The firm moved to 23 Cockspur street in 1799. Paul brought his eldest son Dominic (1790-1789) into partnership c.1810, and his younger son Martin followed. His daughter Caroline married John Scott, editor of the London Magazine. In 1824 Martin sued Paul and Dominic, and in 1826, Paul and Dominic settled, leaving Martin at the old address, and founded the firm of P&D Colnaghi & Co. at 14 Pall Mall East. Martin continued the old business at Cockspur Street (where he was declared bankrupt in 1832 and again in 1843). The Cockspur Street address also appears to have been taken up during the 1830s by Francis Graves and Co., with the note 'late Colnaghi & Co.' (q.v.). Martin died in 1851 and his son, another Martin, became a successful dealer at the Marlborough Gallery at 53 Pall Mall; in 1908 he bequeathed £80,000 and a number of paintings to the National Gallery, London. There was always great rivalry between the two branches of the family. P&D Colnaghi was run after Paul's death by Dominic with John Anthony Scott (d.1864), the son of Dominic's sister Caroline. After Dominic's retirement in 1865, the business was continued by his nephew Andrew McKay as sole proprietor (retired 1894) with the assistance of his own son William (partner 1879-1911). In 1894, on Andrew's retirement, E.F.J.Deprez and Otto Gutekunst (who had been trading together) were taken into partnership. It was Deprez and Gutekunst who took the firm into dealing in paintings, usually via Charles Carstairs of Knoedler in New York. Deprez retired in 1907, and McKay in 1911. In 1911 the firm merged with Obach & Co (whose daughter Gutekunst had married, and in which Gustavus Mayer was a partner), becoming P &D Colnaghi & Obach from 1911-4. In 1913 the firm moved to new specially-built premises at 144-6 New Bond Street (occupied at the end of the century by Partridge). In 1914 the name changed to P&D Colnaghi & Co, and it became a limited company in 1937. Gutekunst retired in 1939; Mayer died still in position in 1954. From then the firm was mainly run by James Byam Shaw (qv) until his retirement in 1968. The firm was bought by Lord Rothschild in 1970, which initiated many changes (see the essay by Jeremy Howard cited above). In 1981 ownership passed to Rudolf Oetker. 1982-2001, the drawings department of the firm was run by Jean-Luc Baroni (q.v.) and was sometimes known as Colnaghi Drawings. The print department continued under Ruth Bromberg, and finally closed in the late 1990s. In 2001, Colnaghi was acquired by Konrad Bernheimer and run by Rachel Kaminsky, with Katrin Bellinger (q.v.) taking over the Old Master Drawings department. NOTE ON STOCK NUMBERS FROM KATHARINA MAYER-HAUNTON, 2004 Numbers preceded by an A were given to Modern Prints, chiefly very late 19th and 20th Century British stock, much of it published by Colnaghi's. S. stock consisted of all those items which were held by the firm on sale on behalf of third parties -printmakers, clients and dealers. They were almost all of a similar type to the A stock. C stock consisted of Old Master and earlier 19th century prints. The break point came with Whistler who was treated as an Old Master. However, as far as I can remember his brother-in-law Seymour Haden was classed as Modern because he was seen as the founder of the Modern British School. There was also B stock which consisted of 18th century reproductive prints of the English and French Schools - mezzotints, stipple prints, aquatints, crayon manner and mixed-method colour prints. In the period between 1911 and 1939 these stocks were handled by different departments and members of staff. My father Gus Mayer was the Director in overall charge of prints, drawings and watercolours.Under him Harold Wright ran the publications department, which handled the A and most of the S stock. Arthur Driver was his assistant. The watercolour department was run by D.C.Baskett, who was also in charge of the B stock. My father ran the Old Master Print Department himself with the assistance of someone whose name I do not know. I have been told that he became an alcoholic and eventually had to be sacked. 1873 McAlpine, Alistair Purchased from :: Burgon, Thomas :: Donated by :: Scott, C W :: 1795 Leggatt Bros Painter and etcher; Associate Royal Academician. His father, Robert Carpenter, was a bookseller and publisher and his mother, Eliza, was heiress to the Foxcroft estate in Yorkshire. As well as his great bequests of glass, prints, ceramics and Japanese ivories to the British Museum, he left funds to set up Professorships of Fine Arts at the Universities of Oxford, Cambridge, and London; the bequest to London also covered scholarships for students and provided for the establishment of the Slade School of Art. He prepared the 'Slade Catalogue' of his glass collection which was edited after his death by A.W. Franks (q.v.) and published in 1869 (reprinted 1871) with a misleading title-page beginning with the title 'Notes on the History of Glassmaking by Alexander Nesbitt, FSA' and thus authorship of the entire catalogue is often mis-attributed to Nesbitt. The only known portrait of Slade is a drawing by Margaret Sarah Carpenter, dated 1851, in the Department of Prints & Drawings at the BM (1874-3-14-1). His collection of antiquities included objects from the recently excavated ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum, which he published. There is an exemplar of his 'Campi Phlegraei. Observations on the Volcanoes of the Two Sicilies' 2 vols, Naples, 1776, with 54 coloured prints by P. Fabris et al, which also contains some of the original drawings for the prints, in the BL, Tab.435.a.15. The first part of his collection was offered to the British Parliament for sale in 1772, and entered the collections of the British Museum for £8,400. The British Museum subsequently received gifts of antiquities and natural history specimens from Hamilton. The 'Second Collection' of vases was lost with the wreck of HMS Colossus off the Scilly Isles in December, 1798. Some 30,000 vessel fragments have since been recovered and entered the collections of the British Museum. Hamilton was a trustee of the British Museum. 1760 - Slade, Charles Felix British merchant in Smyrna. His business failed about 1841 and, after this, his interest in numismatics led him to seek employment at The British Museum. His appointment was initially opposed by the Archbishop of Canterbury and, only later, following the intervention of Samuel Rodgers and Lord Lyndhurst, was he made a supernumerary assistant in the then Department of Antiquities, 1844-58. His collection of antiquities was acquired by the museum in 1842 and, following his death in August 1858, his library was sold at Sotheby's on December 22nd of that year. A large archive of his drawings is in the Ashmolean. The acquistion is documented in Lady Fanny's letters to Sidney Colvin in the department, bound in the letterbook for the year 1886 (letters 36-39). There were five bound volumes, listed in her letter as follows: '43 engravings in the first volume. 40 engravings in vol.2 - of which one is dedicated to Beckford. 3rd vol. contains 21 engravings, the 2nd part 11 engravings. Loggie of the Vatican, 1 loose. 4th vol. has 21 engravings'. The letter makes it clear that the volumes were known to have been purchased in Rome in 1786, presumably from an inscription in them. Colvin selected 330 items for which he paid £35 (1886,1124.1 to 330, of which 1-201 are by Piranesi - some of which have subsequently been de-accessioned as duplicates- and 202-330 are a miscellany by other artists). Alessandro was the eldest son of Fortunato Pio Castellani, founder of the Castellani firm of Roman jewellers best known for their work in the 'archaeological' style. Because he had lost his left hand in a hunting accident at the age of thirteen, he was never able to make jewellery himself but he was a visionary designer and an artistic force until his banishment from Rome in 1860 for his political activities. After that he spent his years in exile in Paris and London promoting the family business and selling antiquities. By 1862 he had moved to Naples where he started his own jewellery business with Giacinto Mellilo (q.v.) and continued selling antiquities. With the fall of the papal government in 1870 and the unification of Italy and the ascendancy to the throne of the house of Savoy, he returned to Rome where he set up his own arts and antiquities gallery. He died in 1883 described in his obituaries as, 'the most successful collector of the remains of ancient art that this generation has seen'. His publications include numerous papers on archaeology and numismatics, 'Collectanea Antiqua' (1843-1880); also a 3-volume autobiography, 'Retrospections, Personal and Archaeological'. Retired to Strood in 1855 to devote himself to numismatic, antiquarian, literary and horticultural pursuits. 01 Jan 1827 31 Dec 1899 Purchased through :: Owen, Felicity :: Miss Byrne Griffin, Charles c.1862 Agnew & Sons 1860 Purchased from :: Beaumont, G :: DSc. Eldest son of Charles William Sherborn (q.v.). Born on 30th June 1861 at 5 Gunter Grove, Chelsea (this property is apparently now number 10.) He left school at the age of 15 to become a business apprentice in various trades before going to the University of Strasburg in 1886/87 where he became attracted to geology and palaeontology, especially Foraminifera. His relationship with the Natural History Museum began in 1888 and although he was paid to undertake various works, he was never an established member of staff. However, he worked for the museum throughout his life, mainly assisting with acquisitions, and thus was often mistaken as a member of its curatorial staff; his permanent desk in the library of the museum became popularly known as "Squire's Corner". In 1890 he collaborated with Sir Arthur Smith Woodward, Keeper of Geology at the Natural History Museum, on "A Catalogue of British Fossil Vertebrata" and he catalogued collections and library of the Geological Society of London. He examined and arranged papers of Sir Richard Owen at Sheen Lodge (much material relating to Mary Anning was dispersed unfortunately). In c. 1890 he also proposed the Index Animalium, a complete list of generic and trivial names from 1758-1850, and which is still in use today. This was his biggest single accomplishment which he had originally intended should cover the period from 1766-1899, but already took forty years to complete in its present form. In 1931 the University of Oxford conferred onto him the honorary degree of Doctor of Science. In 1936, together with a small group of scientists, librarians and bibliographers centred at the British Museum (Natural History), he co-founded the Society for the Bibliography of Natural History, which he not only led but of which he was subsequently named as its first President. He lived a spartan bachelor life but collected stamps, coins, books, manuscripts, prints, and antiquities of all kinds, which he appears to have acquired through thorough trawling of the London antique shops as there is little record of him having done much travelling. He presented a valuable series of Byzantine coins to the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge just before his death. His prints went to the Art Department of University College, London. He also donated much to the Natural History Museum, plus a collection of Great Britain, 1841 1d pink postal stationery envelopes to The British Library (1913); and assorted drawings (1912, 1918, 1931, 1936, 1940, 1944), coins, medals and books (1923, 1927, 1929, 1938), Classical antiquities (1909, 1932, 1936), Egyptian antiquities (1922, 1933, 1935), an object from Barbados (1925), two post-Medieval English items, including a box made by his father (1931), a Chinese bronze (1933), assorted minor Iron Age, Romano-British and Anglo-Saxon antiquities (1934), and a collection of prehistoric British flints, Byzantine lead sealings, a Mesopotamian cuneiform tablet and three "Luristan bronzes" to The British Museum (1935). Several of these objects were entered on deposit on 21 March 1933 under a mis-spelling of his name, "Dr Sherborne" (ME deposit book). He died on 22 June 1942. The majority of his papers and correspondence are held in the British Library, with additional manuscripts in the Natural History Museum library, and his bequest of banknotes to The British Museum arrived via the executor of his will, Mr W.H.T. Tam, also of the British Museum (Natural History). Born Paris. Travelled to Egypt at the age of 22; acquired an interest in the fine arts in Italy; acquired some knowledge of Arabic and Persian languages, and then travelled overland to Ceylon. Following a suggestion made by the Royal Geographical Society he lived among the Bakhtiari tribes of western Iran in 1840-42, publishing his account in 'Early Adventures'. He first visited Mesopotamia in 1841. He excavated most extensively at Nineveh and Nimrud in Assyria. He conducted two lengthy seasons of excavations in Assyria, from November 1845-Juner 1847 and from October 1849-April 1851. He first visited Khorsabad in August 1846 and returned to excavate there in November 1849. After his early archaeological career he turned to politics, becoming MP for Aylesbury; Under Secretary for Foreign Affairs, 1861-1866; British Ambassador to Spain, 1869-1877; Ambassador in Turkey, 1877-1881. He retired to live in Venice, developed an important collection of paintings (bequeathed to the National Gallery) and became a patron of the glass industry at Murano. His portrait is held by the Department of the Middle East in The British Museum, and his extensive papers, now mostly in the British Library, were bequeathed to the British Museum by his widow, Enid, in 1912. Curator; in 1879 appointed as a curator in The British Museum, where he succeeded A.S. Murray as Keeper of the Department of Greek & Roman Antiquities from 1904-1908. He travelled to Iran with Robert Murdoch Smith (q.v.), then Director of the Indo-European Telegraph company in Iran, and recommended to the Trustees of the British Museum that they consider making and displaying casts of the sculptures at Persepolis in order to complement the existing Classical, Near Eastern and Egyptian displays (a recommendation which gave rise to the Herbert Weld (q.v.) - Lorenzo Giuntini (q.v.) expedition to Persepolis in 1891/92 which was jointly sponsored by Harcourt Smith and Sir John Lumley Savile, q.v.). Cecil Smith was appointed Director and Secretary of the Victoria & Albert Museum (q.v.) from 1909, and knighted on 26 June in the same year; he retired from the V&A in October 1924. During his period at the V&A he instituted a re-organisation of most of the display collections according to materials, instituted annual exhibitions of industrial art, developed a modern collection, and argued against an antiquarian approach for museums in favour of using the V&A as a means of industrian education; he also appears to have particularly developed their collection of watercolours and generally regarded as a very successful Director. He was also an active member of the Museums Association, to whom he advocated a form of diploma training in museum curatorship at the V&A, and the International Museums Office (the forerunner of ICOM). It is not clear whether this individual is the same person as the Cecil Smith (q.v.) who donated a medal in 1894 and the Cecil Smith (q.v.) who donated a stamp-seal in 1887. He returned to England in 1854, having made a fortune in banking and speculation, and began his collection of antiquities and objects associated with ancient cults, in particular the cult of Priapus, the god of fertility. The collection contained fertility symbols from the ancient world as well as votive or amuletic objects, dedicated to saints or gods in the hope of protection. He presented his collection to the BM in 1865, following an illness the same year. The collection covers many cultures and many periods; the objects are to be found in the relative departments.
